The Guest of August: BON BON

Genre: Color Pencil Artist

Note:  Irodori basic meaning is “to color”

Profile Colored pencil drawing Class Instructor at Asahi Culture Center, Kyoto Newspaper Shimbun Cultural Center and Yomiuri Culture Center.

Graduated Osaka University of Arts, Department of Imaging. He worked in the sales department at a general company, but retired in May 2017 for personal reasons.

Bon Bon: It all started when I suddenly had time to spare and drew the first colored pencil drawing, in my life, with the colored pencils that I happened to receive as a gift!

In September of 2017, I started to use SNS (Social Network Service similar to Social Media Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in English) and I put my work of colored pencil drawings on it.  I was very impressed that I received the first “Like” in my life!  Taking this opportunity, I posted various colored pencil drawings on a monthly basis, and gradually started receiving requests (orders) for colored pencil drawings from my followers.  So, I started working as a colored pencil drawing artist.  After designing a CD jacket and holding a Solo Exhibition, I am currently an instructor of colored pencil drawing!

The drawings are pursuing realism to reproduce the “real thing” as it is, regardless of genre.  (Such as: Food, cars, animals, people, landscapes, etc.”) I am a representative of IRODORIAL- a group of real colored pencil painters/artists.

Q. Could you tell us the origin story of how the group “IRODORIAL” formed by some of the colored pencil artists (including you)?

First of all, IRODORIAL itself is a group of people who are doing colored pencil drawings in the (Social Media) SNS area in 2019, wondering if something interesting can come of it. Initially, we had four members, but now we have six. This team of artists produces realistic drawings created with colored pencils.

The origin of the group name:

We hold meetings every month, but we all came up with ideas for a name that people would remember. The word “IRODORI” was chosen there, and it was coined by combining the word “IRODORI”, which is to color and the realism I mentioned earlier, “Real”. It became the name “IRODORIAL”. We all agreed to use this word and added the word “Real” from the word “realistic” and made the word “IRODORIAL” for our group name.

-So, there were 4 people as original members and now 6 people make the artist group IRODORIAL.

Yes, that’s right!

Q. Your profile says, “I lived a life unrelated to painting.” What attracted you to drawing with colored pencils and how did you continue to do so?

Originally I was a company employee until 2017. I would say that it was a sales position. There are stores all over the country and I was in charge of many of them – – like an area manager. I had been so busy like a workaholic. I had been doing that for a long time. I happened to have a good vacation for almost a month. I decided to stay in Okinawa Island most of that time. I also happened to get a colored pencil set as a birthday present. I thought that it would be good idea to kill some time and brought it with me. After all, when I was drawing a picture thinking that I could take it home in a different way from “photos” – – such as the various landscapes and this unique Okinawa culture that I never had in my life, I fell in love with it! I thought that it would be possible to draw that scene and bring that with me. Then, I was fascinated with that drawing work. It fits into my soul. (Smile) and then I continued to draw for more than 3 years now.

-In Okinawa! It’s a beautiful place, isn’t it?

Yes, it was actually Ishigaki Island. I took in the various beautiful scenes there… Actually I had lot of time… Of course, I took lots of pictures. But, it was really the first time that I started with the feeling that I should draw a picture of it and remember it! I started drawing and thought it would be great memory for me to draw those beautiful places. This is my start in drawing!

-I understand that you have not studied drawing as major subject, have you?

Ummm…It’s complicated, but to tell you the truth, I went to Osaka University of the Arts and I was in the film department there. So, in the end I didn’t draw at all at the university. However, when I was studying for the entrance exam, I needed some knowledge of painting. So, at that time, I studied drawing film storyboards for only one year. But, that’s about it!

-But, isn’t the storyboard and the (realistic) pictures you’re drawing now completely different?

Yes! The story board is like a four-frame graphic cartoon in terms of image. So, it’s more like a diagram of what the layout is like. What kind of position the people are arranged in on a specific background. So, yes – – I think the picture (drawing) will be a little different.

-I believe your current works are very professional and your followers would be quite interested in how you managed to draw such authentic and realistic images without any technical knowledge in drawing. Could you tell us about this secret?

Well, I originally liked drawing. Mmmm… It is difficult to answer this question. I acquired a deeper knowledge through (self-taught) self-education via “How to Books” and YouTube. But, at first, it’s just that I wanted to draw a picture because I brought a sketchbook with me! The more I do it, the more I discover. I would say… I discovered the various ways of expression through drawings – – that would be interesting for me and those accumulations of my findings – – would be good for me.

Q. You seem to choose food as the subject of your drawings. How did you decide to choose food subjects for your work?

It is quite simple; my interest is only for food. (Big Smile!) During my salesman period, I believed that eating was everything for my life. I have a strong obsession with food…

-So that’s it! Actually, your drawing of Yakiniku (Barbecue) is especially amazing! You drew the beef so real, which shows rare and medium roasting of the meat. It is quite realistic and looks so delicious.

Thank you so much. I usually look at pictures and draw them as they are. But, I couldn’t take pictures of Yakiniku very well. So…I combined various imaginations and other pictures in my mind. I imagined a lot and referred to other photos. Therefore, I synthesized an image of the roasted and roasting meat in my mind. It would be a success if you felt that the meat was real and that it is now being roasted in my picture. (Smile).

-When the colored pencil artists, like you, draw the rough sketch in their mind – – would photos be quite useful most of the time?

Probably, yes. Most of the artists use the photos. Actually, most of the members of IRODORIAL take photos and some go the actual site for sketching and then complete it in detail while looking at the photos. Of course, there are various ways to draw. But, basically, we do so.

Q.What do think about when you draw?

I have a desire to be better and better at drawing. In that case, I still have to be able to draw all genres. So, I’m really thinking about drawing all genres. Therefore, I think that I need to try any subject. As you know, there is the proverb. “If you like it, you will be good.” Therefore, I chose my favorite things as my motif as much as possible.

-When you draw, do you think about drawing exactly like “the real thing?” Or…are you trying to make the viewer smell the food, by seeing your work?

-Yes! After all, what I concentrate most on when I’m creating is that drawing is “visual”. So I wonder if I can somehow express something, other than, this visual. I mentioned earlier that there is a lot of food, but when it comes to temperature, heat and cold, crackling sounds, and smells, it’s something that people can feel with their 5 senses when they look at my work. It’s best to draw it – – as if it were! So it may be the most gratifying to have people say, “It looks delicious!” (Big smile!)

Q. Are there any struggles when you draw?

Basically, I like to draw and there are no struggles. But if I’m forced to say, it may be finding and choosing the subject. I think it takes the longest time to decide on the subject.

-I see… When I saw your drawing of TAKOYAKI, I sensed that you like it very much.

Yes, there was a solo exhibition in Osaka (Smile). I simply thought that Osaka is famous for TAKOYAKI. Then, I draw TAKOYAKI!!! Let’s draw! Like that!

Q. In the future, do you have any big dreams that you would like to challenge yourself in regarding your future works?

Speaking of colored pencil works alone, I would like to draw everything! In other words, I would like to apply anything in the so-called real world onto a flat surface. As you know, color pencils are very easy for everybody to use. Most of people use them from the childhood and I am used to them. That is why it is recognized as the material for students, not for professionals, from the standpoint of artist materials. I would like to change that. I wonder if it can’t be overturned. For example, there are works in the Hoki Museum – – oil paintings, but I wonder if those paintings can’t be realized with colored pencils? I would like to draw the scene, people, or anything shown in those oil paintings. That is my big challenging. This is my big ambition!

Q. Please let us know if you have any information you would like to convey to everyone, such as an upcoming exhibition?

Well, the exhibition is being held right now at the time of this recording. (Recorded on 7/5). This exhibition is for IRODORIAL and is held until July 15th in Osaka, at KAWACHI Artist material shop. Also, our new (IRODORIAL) book will be published in September. This is the second book for us, which is quite different from our first book. It would be more of a coloring type and it would be friendly for the beginners. It will teach you and it will be released this fall. Also, I’m sorry about my story of another company, but I received the Grand Prize at the “1st Pencil/Drawing/Colored Pencil Drawing Contest” The subject of my work this time was Paprika (bell pepper), so it’s an ingredient before cooking! (Laughing)

-By the way, are you doing activities like teaching in the classroom or doing seminars?

Yes, I organized the “Real Colored Pencil Drawing Course” at Kyoto Newspaper Culture Center and the Asahi Culture Center.

Q. How many colors do you use in your class?

Well, I haven’t counted, but maybe, several hundreds of colors. I’m using products from various manufacturers, so if you put them all together it would be thousands of colors. But of course, not all colors are used in one drawing!

-I assume that each branded colored pencil has some unique feature… Would you select that pencil to draw your specific points?

Yes! I think it is automatically selected in my mind. I use this color of this brand when I draw that… Yeah, it is very naturally decided because I use both oil-based and water soluble colored pencils. Recently, I like the Karismacolor Pencils for drawing meat! I like it very much.

-Oh ! Really ! Of course, you use your technique and selecte each pencil when you draw.

Yes, there are 6 members in our IRODORIAL group. And…Each member has their unique technique and it is quite interesting to talk to the other members about their methods!

-It is wonderful to be able to meet with the other members, while having stimulating conversations regarding their work.

I agree. This is the main purpose to create the group (team). The story goes back to the beginning, but when IRODORIAL was formed, I had two philosophies. One is that we wanted to popularize colored pencil drawings, so we would like to broaden the base of colored pencils or have as many people do it as possible. The other is to grow each other not only with each other’s technology, but also with humanity, so we decided on those two as rules and let’s do the rest freely. We all expect to improve by learning from each other. Since I started it, I wish I could continue to work hard with the members in the future!
