1.How did you first become interested in drawing? For example, were you attracted to a specific work of art or you were influenced by another artist or inspiration?

Well, I was influenced by my father. He likes paintings and drawings. When I was young, I always looked at his work and naturally I began to draw.
Of course, I like drawing and I am also interested in seeing paintings. While I was looking at Impressionists’ art works, I wanted to draw like those paintings.

2.Which artist do you admire the most?

Well, it is Monet ( Oscar- Claude Monet, 1840-1926). When I saw his paintings, I wondered why he was able to draw the light of sunshine so bright and so admired his drawing technique.

3.Which painting is your most favorite of Monet?

When I saw the painting “Port routier, Argenteuil (1874), I was so impressed because it showed the glitter of the water surface and the shimmering sun light, which had an enormous impact on me.

4.Could you tell us, “Why did you choose the colored pencil drawing, rather than watercolor or oil painting and mastered it to the top level?”

I do not think that I mastered the colored pencil drawing and I am still learning… It is just simple because I was not able to control my drawing with brushes.

Colored pencils are the drawing material covered with a hard wooden case, which can convey the signal in my mind to my hand, and I can directly deliver to the paper. In other words, the colored pencil is the most controllable drawing material ( tool ).

I tried to use many drawing / painting materials and found that the colored pencil is the right drawing material for me.

5.Colored Pencils can arrange your detailed expressions through technique, which is quite different from other watercolor painting mediums.
What do you think is the difference?

I believe that the colored pencil can also arrange the detailed drawing, which is most appropriate for me. Naturally, it is a wooden case pencil and so the more you sharpen it, the finer the tip will be, and you can draw very fine lines. In that sense, that is the unique feature of the colored pencil. However, it is not only for the detailed drawing, but also it  can be used for dynamic expressions by drawing roughly.
In that sense, we can say that colored pencils are quite versatile as drawing tools to express your work and your inner expressions on paper.

6.Please tell us the features of your favorite colored pencils.

When it comes to the entire colored pencil product lines, it is quite an outstanding product category.  Whereby each product line has a unique drawing feature with each brand manufacturer.  One pencil has quite the hard drawing feel and the other has a very soft feel.
I use Oil based colored pencils, which have oil content and it is a kind of sticky feeling in a good way and easy to apply on the paper.
Among of the oil based colored pencils, I use KARISMACOLOR BRAND. These pencils can easily arrange color mixtures, which is a great and outstanding unique feature. In other words, it can arrange the color mixing, gradations and shades of expressions like an oil painting. For my work, I mainly use the KARISMACOLOR colored pencil, since it is easy to make the colors I want.

7.Please tell us more about “the expressions like oil painting” in more detail?

As you may know, the oil base has the unique features to express the texture of materials with the raised pigments. In other words, to create unique expressions by adding one color after another to create a lively layered expression. Normally, people use the colored pencil with very light touch. Then, the color impact will be very light compared to the oil painting and it would be difficult to make rich colors intense like an oil painting.

In my case, it was really disappointing to see the difference when our colored pencil drawings are lined up next to oil paintings at group exhibitions. The color pencil drawings looked a bit hard and it was quite difficult to make the kind of expression powerful and with impact. Therefore, I put one color after another many times. Then, you can get more deep color tones and also similar rolled color like an oil painting.
Then, I finally found that mixing various colors might be the best technique, rather than applying the monocolor to line up as my image expression.

8.What is art for you?

Quite difficult to answer…. (Smile).
To be frank with you, I have never thought that my work is art.
If there is something I want to draw and keep it, I start to draw with such a passion and impulse.
I do not have any intention to make it more artistic or this is my art. I just express my passion and impulse through my work.
When people see it and feel that it is art, then, it is recognized as art. If not, I think it is fine. Therefore, I believe that the people can judge that this is artistic work when they see it.

9. We would like to introduce your drawings, and book, here. If you have any upcoming plans for your artistic works in exhibitions and/or work shops, please let us know so that we may tell others.

Well, I think that my most important task is not to make my drawings known in the world. It is my mission to share the joy of drawing with many people and increase the people’s interest to enjoy drawing.
For that purpose, I need to think how I can deliver my passion and share the joy of drawing …..
When the class is restarted, it would be the most important thing for me. But, with the current situation, I will deliver various videos to show people how to draw through You Tube, which everybody can look at.

Also, I would like to extend an invitation to creative artists and influencers to provide an online lesson with people who are participating in the actual class.  I believe that the concept of online lesson learning is quite possible, even if a real class is actually held.   For example, it would be quite useful and enjoyable for those who cannot come to the actual class and also for use as a supplemental lesson.
For the art exhibition, I would like to arrange it at the available time in autumn. Also, some events will be organized at the art supply shops.
After this, I would like to resume my various activities as much as possible.

We will continue to deliver compelling interviews with the leading creative artists and influencers in various fields such as art, fashion, cooking, etc…
