1) Miss Carolyn, please share with us how you began your desire to even create a quilt!
Well, first…Thank you so much for having me! It’s an honor to be here. I really got into making quilts. I really have to thank my Mom for that! I grew up around sewing. She made all of our clothes growing up – – my siblings and I. So I was really familiar with going to the fabric store with her and the idea of taking a pattern and fabric – – and kind of through that kind of magic of sewing – – and it would all come together and make something that you could use or wear. And, I loved that process! But, it really wasn’t until after I got out of college that I became really interested in making quilts. Again, it goes back to my Mom making quilts. I was home, during the summer, on a break and I saw her doing “free motion” quilting on her sewing machine. And, it just looked really exciting to me because it looked like drawing, but with a sewing machine! I always loved to draw. I have a background in design.
My degree is in architecture and so drawing is a very familiar thing to me. But then… kind of the idea of bringing that into quilting and sewing was really exciting because you could take, you know, the idea of drawing – – but then you’re doing it with a sewing machine and you have all these layers of a quilt. You know, that gives you this great texture and it was just really exciting! So that really is what got me excited about quilting at first.
Wow, Carolyn that’s a very inspiring story! You became an architect first, but it seems like your passion directed you into quilt making perhaps because of the colors or perhaps because of using your hands?
2) When you design your quilt, please explain how you come up with your design ideas?
Yes, it’s exactly that! Really, the colors, the fabrics – – all the components of making a quilt were things that really interested me. Of course, architecture; I loved studying architecture and working in that field for several years. You know, it’s a designed based thing – – architecture – – and then so is quilting.
And, for me the kind of components of quilting and the process was a better fit. And so, I really kind of took to that and became super excited about it. And yea, those components are really what I was able to latch on to when I got into quilting and then fully transition over into becoming and working professionally in quilting.
Well, your designs are fabulous Carolyn!
3) When you begin your creative process, do you see your finished design in your mind before you even begin?
Yea…In some ways I do. A lot of times my designs are inspired by an idea in my head. So I’m really curious about how certain colors will come together. How certain shapes might reflect, you know, something that I’m inspired by. Whether it’s something in my surroundings, something that I see in my daily life, you know – – a glimmer of something that I think about and I wonder how that would interact – – then translate that into quilting, into fabric and into thread. So yea, that’s really how the design ideas start! And then, through the process, that’s how I kind of work them out.
4) When you build your quilt, Carolyn, it’s like an architect. Is it a traditional American quilting style that you began with and then you expand your creativity into a modernized design?
Ahhh yes, so I guess – – I mean, my Mom is a very traditional quilter. So you know, her work that I have been exposed to a good part of my life, has been the very traditional blocks – – which are great…but, I think, when I first started quilting that was around the time when this new, you know, the modern quilting movement was coming along and that was a very liberating feeling for me – – knowing that you could make whatever quilt you want to make. And so, I definitely have been grateful for that freedom and of course I have so much respect for traditional blocks in the past. And so, it’s been fun to kind of learn from the past but, then also make quilts that are a reflection of kind of the things I’m interested in now. And, the things that I see and I am excited about in my daily life.
Well, Carolyn, your designs are uniquely you! That’s for sure!
5) I know that you’re endorsed with Notions along with many other endorsements, and I know you use machines and you use hand tools. Miss Carolyn, would you please share with us – – What your favorite TOOLS are for quilt making?
Sure! Tools are always – – really something to talk about and to explore – – especially, you know: I do machine quilting, I do machine piecing, I also love doing a lot of hand work. And I think, that especially with hand work any time your hand sewing or hand quilting those tools make a big difference and it is much more noticeable. So I always encourage – – any time I’m teaching my students, I encourage them to first of all get the best tools they can afford; the best that they have access to – – and also, try different things because our hands are different shapes. The fabrics that we’re working with are different; the components… we can change those up. And so, there’s this really nice kind of freedom that comes once you realize that we have a lot of control in the components that we are using. And a lot of times, that can come down to the tools that we use. And, to finding the right fit for, not only for ourselves, but the projects that we’re working on – – so yea – – really good quality thread, great needles, sharp scissors – – those are all going to make a huge difference in the quilts that you make!
Oh, I see – – thank you for sharing that! Do you have any advice for someone who just wanted to start out? Just looking at your designs, you get inspired and wonder… if I could do that? How do you even begin?
I think that the best place to start, is just to start with something your excited about. Because if you’re really excited about something, you’re not going to think about the kind of fear around learning new things or the things you don’t know yet. You’re just so excited to kind of tackle something that you really are interested in. So whether that’s, you know, certain fabric color or combination – – or maybe it’s a certain technique – – like in my case with machine quilting, maybe there’s a new tool that you’ve seen that does something that (I don’t know) you’re really excited about; whatever it is I really think that’s the spot – – whatever you’re most excited about, is the best place to start!
Well, excitement and passion go together, so I agree with that creative process!
6) If you could explore new elements in your work, what would your next goal be – or- what would be your next dream vision project?
That’s a great question! I think lately, obviously, we’ve been going this experience of the pandemic. Many of us have been very isolated. Prior to the pandemic, I was used to teaching students a lot and going to retreats with friends – – and just sharing with others. And, so this year kind of just spending more time alone. I think it’s good, in a sense, that like I’ve really been doing a lot of quilting and I’ve enjoyed that – – just kind of by myself. But, I’ve really kind of thought about this and I’m really looking forward to spending more time making things with others and really seeing what they’re making and kind of sharing in that experience. So that’s something I’m looking forward to!
Oh Carolyn, I agree and I think we all are looking forward to spending some time with people creating!
7) Please tell us about your future activities in quilting? Will you be participating in any exhibits? Or will you be presenting new designs for the public or for sale? Or – do you have any upcoming quilting plans for 2021?
Yes, so I definitely have some new quilt patterns that I’m working on. So I’m excited to release those. They’re projects that I’m super excited about! Just as my vice, for like new V’s, was to go towards something new or I’m excited about – – kind of, any of the work that I put out – – always starts with things that I’m really excited about – – So, I’ll be sharing more of those this year. I also have new fabrics that I’ve designed with Robert Kauffman, that will be coming out. Those are probably the safest things to say. I know at some time in the future, events will happen again and I’ll be excited to participate in exhibits as well. But, for now…definitely the patterns and fabric.
